Pyman’s Theory made all in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown this evening to record her 2nd victory for owners Matt Williams and Michael Owen.
The Racing Post commented;
“Not since 2003 has a winner of the National Stakes followed up at Royal Ascot (Russian Valour, Norfolk Stakes), but it’s a race often contested by smart types, the most high profile in recent times being Excellent Art, who won in 2006 and added the following year´s St James´s Palace Stakes.
This looked a solid enough edition, albeit the favourite underperformed, and PYMAN´S THEORY became the first filly to win the race since Sweepstake in 2007.
The winner hadn´t been able to utilise her speed when sluggishly away from the widest draw in a fillies´ Listed event at York last time, but she was much too fast for her rivals on this occasion, perhaps aided by her first try on an easy surface. She had a bit of company for the early lead courtesy of outsider Powerful Wind, but burnt that rival off before halfway and had the race won when around three lengths clear over a furlong out. It´s true to say her cause was helped by the runner-up having to wait for a run after meeting trouble, but it was the winner´s superior natural pace that afforded her a better position than Mark Johnston´s runner, and anyway she was entitled to get getting tired in the last furlong.
Pyman´s Theory´s was confirming the impression made when taking a Leicester maiden on her second start and she’ll go to the Queen Mary with a chance.”
Pyman’s Theory’s name is in reference to James Pyman’s theory that Exceed And Excel’s have a particularly good record at Ascot. It was due to this that Michael went to the sales this year to specifically buy an Exceed And Excel filly.
All being well, James’s theory will be put to the test at Ascot in a few weeks time!
