Ballista opened his account yesterday at the first time of asking in the 4.10 EBF Maiden Stakes at Haydock. Ridden by Richard Kingscote he was keen early and travelled strongly throughout, before responding well to his jockey and finally coming away under hands and heels from Royal Exchange, the 30/100 favourite.
Ballista was the most popular horse in our five to follow competition, the updated results of which can be seen by clicking here.
Racing post comment:
“The time of this maiden was most impressive, being only 1.46 seconds slower than the 5-y-o High Standing managed in an earlier Listed contest. They raced stands´ side.
BALLISTA, an 11,000euros half-brother to five winners, would appear to be well-above average, for not only did he record a quick time, but he defeated a colt who had already shown useful form, and there was 5l back to the third. Fitted with a cross noseband, he was keen through the first furlong, before travelling powerfully just inbehind the pace, and he then found plenty for pressure without having to be given too hard a race. He may well be Royal Ascot material.
Royal Exchange didn´t seem to improve on the form he showed when second in a hot Newbury maiden on debut, although in fairness he probably ran into quite a useful colt. This ground probably wasn´t ideal and he ought to be winning soon enough.“
